Andersen: 26 Small Caprices, Op. 37 – No. 18

Hello again! Back to Andersen’s 26 Small Caprices!

I thought when I started Op. 37 that this set of etudes would go fairly quickly, since many of them are less than one page long and the first few were easy enough to trick me into a false sense of security. However, Andersen must have been a sneaky dude because the middle of this book sure is a challenge! Number 16 took several attempts before I got a recording I could live with. This one is a nightmare flexibility workout, but I found the thing that tripped me up the most was getting tangled in the fingerings for the very highest notes. This recording still has a few flubs, but I felt that I did the best job with phrasing in this one – it’s hard to make it sound like anything other than an octave exercise!

This week’s Etude of the Week is coming along nicely, so maybe we’ll have a not-Sunday-evening recording of that tomorrow! See you then!
